Poppet Finds A Home
Written and illustrated by Karen Cove

'Poppet Finds a Home'  is the first book in the 'Poppet the Dog' series. It is a creative and lively book based on a true story.  It retells the  journey of an abandoned puppy and her litter that was left under a remote oak tree in the country. Sadly, they were not wanted by their owner.   The pups are found and taken to a humane association that nurtured all the pups back to health. They find a loving home for Poppet as well as all her litter mates.

'Poppet Finds a Home' is a great read aloud book for all elementary children and has bright, engaging pictures on each page that help to convey the story.   It provides many useful opportunities for class discussion on how to be a responsible pet owner and also creates an environment where children can learn about the purpose of local humane associations and shelters.  Contained in the book are many good examples of elaboration, suspense and good word choice that help teach the elements of a story in a primary classroom.

Upper elementary students will benefit from the free study guide that contains worksheets, lesson plans and creative writing prompts on personification as well as the focus on responsible pet ownership at a more mature level.
